Un Chien Andalou

Alright, this film is so disturbing that it wouldn't be very healthy of me to not rant about it.  So what does a thin cloud running across a full moon remind you of?  Well it is unmistakably a razor slicing an eye to the surrealists.

I sit down, expecting a French flavored short film of a dog (chien=dog in French).  It opens with a man sharpening a razor.  After a few minutes the cloud moving across the moon appears.  Immediately the same man cuts open a woman's left eye......I cringe when I think about it.  From that moment on my expectation of a dog story had vanished completely.

This short is one of if not the most disturbing and scary film I have ever seen.  Here are some other scenes it is famous for:

• a woman pokes at a severed hand in the street with her cane
• a man drags two grand pianos containing dead and rotting donkeys, the tablets of the Ten Commandments, and two live priests (Dali plays one of the priests in this scene)
• a man's hand has a hole in the palm from which ants emerge
• a woman's armpit hair attaches itself to a man's face.
